Ionic Liquid-based Technology for Ammonia recovery from Purge Gas

In an ammonia process, purge gas is discharged from the ammonia synthesis reactor, which contains 3-6% (V) ammonia (NH3). At present, water washing is applied widely to recover ammonia from purge gas; however, this method endures high energy consumption, and high waste water discharge. We developed new ionic liquid-based solvent to recover ammonia in the purge gas. The structure-property relationship and the absorption mechanism of NH3, CO2, N2, CO and CH4, and the transfer properties of gas in ionic liquid were studied. The new technology has obvious advantage of lower energy consumption, less waste water discharge, easy for operation. The first pilot plant of 1000 Nm3/h was established and run successfully in ChuanHua Refco Group Ltd as shown in Fig. 6. The purity of the recovered ammonia is higher than 95% and the energy consumption is 30% lower than the water washing technology.
